Held every year in the month of January, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was first celebrated in the year 2003 from January 9th to January 11th and was sponsored by Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs and FICCI. Creating ‘consciousness of Global Indian Family’ was the main highlight and achievement of the first Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and was attended by large number of foreign and domestic delegates.
Defining new policy initiative for the Diaspora and preparing a global network of the younger generation of the Indian Diaspora were the main objective of the second Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.
Third Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was held in Mumbai and was attended by large number of Indian political and business leaders, professionals, scientists and innovators.
Held in Hyderabad in the year 2006, the main focus of the fourth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was Indian Diaspora knowledge network, opportunities in education, Indian Diaspora youth etc.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas seeks to recognize the achievements of the Indian Diaspora and making use of their skills and expertise in the development of India.

The event has also led to major achievements like providing aid and help to the social cause. Example-The Indian Diaspora and the Indian Government could successfully raise over million dollars for Tsunami victims.
