Introduction
The post Independence era saw the downfall of many a royal family who had to submit there estates to the Government for an annual pension. This pension often turned out to be meager considering the lavish lifestyle these families had come to get used to over all those years. Besides, they had their huge ancestral mansions that needed a mending here and a patchwork there all the year round. At this juncture many of these families turned their spare havelis, or the uninhabited portions of their regal houses to hotels. While the more prominent families got into a contract with larger hotel groups, the smaller families, and consequently the smaller house owners, got into the business themselves.
They turned a part of their residence into a hotel and took charge of the hotel themselves. This phenomenon saw the birth of a large number of homestays in jaipur which have now turned out quite popular among tourists who intend to spend a night or two in the city in a homely or a traditionally Rajasthani ambience.
