Khajuraho
Khajuraho, the quintessence of Indian art and architecture is a land of magnificent temples. It is believed that the temples of Khajuraho were built during the reign of the Chandelas. Built mostly between 950 AD and 1050 AD, the 85 architecturally perfect temples are intricately carved with human figures.
All the temples of Khajuraho have similar designs. The temples usually have a large porch or Ardhamandapa, a small hall, Mandapa which leads to a large hall called Mahamandapa. From the main hall a vestibule leads to the Garba Griha or the sanctum which houses the image of the deity. The sanctum is surrounded by an enclosed corridor.
Tourist Places in Khajuraho
Some of the well known temples of Khajuraho are the Kandariya Mahadeo Temple, the Lakshmana Temple, Devi Jagadamba Temple, the Temple of Vishwanath and Nandi.
The Chaunsat Yogini, dedicated to goddess Kali is one of the oldest temples of Khajuraho. The uniqueness of the temple is that it is the only temple in Khajuraho that is built in granite. These are some of the temples belonging to Western Group of Temples.
Among the Eastern Group of Temples, the temple of Parsavanath is the largest. A century old Shantinath temple is considered to be the youngest temples of Khajuraho. Other temples belonging to this group are the temple of Bramha and Hanuman, Javari and Vamana.
The Duladeo and the Chaturbhuja temples are part of the Southern Group of Temples.
