Set out on tours to Agra - a treasure trove of Mughal heritage.
Known to the world as the home of the Taj Mahal - Agra has
a history that can be traced back to the beginning of civilization.
Ancient Hindu scriptures refer to Agra as 'Agraban'. Agra,
in fact was next only in importance to Mathura in the ancient
ages. A part of the ancient Surasena Empire, Agra was noticed
when Sultan Sikander Lodhi established his capital in the
region. The city as we see it today was founded by Badal Singh,
a local chieftain.
The destiny of Agra changed as Babur, the Mughal Emperor
conquered this region. For a while the Mughal capital was
in Delhi and in the later years the capital shifted to Agra.
There was a spate of architectural development, patronization
of crafts and music during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Artisans and craftsmen came and settled in Agra from different
parts of India, Arabia and Persia as the Mughal rulers were
known for their penchant for beauty, luxury and artistic inclinations.
The construction of the Taj Mahal in the 17th century immortalized
Agra as the epitome of love and everlasting love. Emperor
Shah Jahan built this glorious marble mausoleum as an ovation
to what he shared with his lover and wife, Arjumand Bano Begum,
popularly known as Mumtaz Mahal to the world.
